Mt. Hood/Timberline Lodge, OR - July 23, 2009

We probably mentioned that we had gotten to see a few things once we arrived. It was great that John's sister, Kathy invited us to go with them to Mt. Hood the first Thursday we were here. Seeing Mt. Hood from a distance can seem like a mirage, especially when you've lived in Ohio for all but 4 yrs. of you life...it makes you want to see it for yourself, you know, to prove it really exists.

The ride up to the mountain was beautiful once we got thru all the clouds in Portland city and through Government Camp; funny how it all just opened up! It was actually a slightly chilly day down below, so we knew it would only get colder once up the mountain. The mountain switchback roads were not as bad as some I've been on before (i.e. Hawaii--remember that, Paulette?) and you could see the Sister Mountains off in the distance.

Once arriving at the timberline, i.e. the name Timberline Lodge, we prepared by putting on extra clothes. It was definitely windy and the air was thinner. Had to move a bit slower so as not to pass out! I guess we weren't prepared to see so many people there to ski & snowboard! There was snow on the mountain! The people on the mountain looked like little dots, only, if you looked real close, those dots MOVED!

These people looked rather relaxed and somewhat like they owned the place. We figured they rake in the dough at this place ALL year long, and make a KILLING in the winter months.

Views of the mountain, wherever we positioned ourselves, were gorgeous. I can see why some folks just can't leave the mountains for flatter ground. We went inside the lodge and saw amazing handcrafted work everywhere. The beams used to construct this place were ENORMOUS, to say the least. This 1930's ski lodge was a major undertaking, and artisans (lumber, construction, and iron workers) were hired by the Federal Works Project Administration. Every piece of hardware, including door handles and hinges were hand crafted, and had to be approved by the designer before even being installed, NO EXCEPTIONS.

So, we've included some pictures for you. If you have aspirations of coming to visit the Pacific Northwest, please make sure you include this in part of your trip!

Awesome pictures of Mt. Hood! I especially like the one of Scott and Karen at the Pacific Crest Trail marker with Mt. Hood in the background. I'm glad you are enjoying this area of the U.S. Sounds like you're getting immersed in Greek studies. Hope that you find the job(s) the LORD has for you. -- Ron
