Trip to Mt. St. Helens

Hey Y'All!

We have put some great pictures and a couple of videos up from our trip to Mt. St. Helens with our friends John and Holly Gedney(at least we think they're great!). Karen and I previously saw the mountain up close from the south side (facing Portland). We left a post from that on the blog previously. But you cannot get an appreciation for what happened to this mountain until you see it from the north. This is where we went this time around. The whole area surrounding the mountain on the north has been designated a volcanic national monument. The devastation can be seen everywhere. The river basin (Toutle River) was totally engulfed by the landslide that occurred when the mountain erupted. Parts of the area surrounding the mountain look like a moonscape. Yet, life has returned here; truly amazing. We heard frogs going at it while we were walking on the trail at the foot of the mountain. There were new lakes that were created from the eruption, as old streams and lakes were displaced. Seeing whole forests with huge tree trunks snapped at the base was a testament to how powerful the initial blast was from the volcano.

Also, just days before we came up here the mountain made national news when a climber fell into the crater from the south rim (about a 1,500 to 2,000 foot fall). He was dead when they found him a day later. Looking at this snow-covered mountain was so beautiful, yet imagine the power it displayed back 30 years ago. A testament to the awesome power and majesty of our God. He is incredibly beautiful, yet, as the book of Hebrews tells us, He is "a consuming fire". If anyone comes out here to visit, please plan on letting us take you up here. It's only an hour and a half drive to the other side of the mountain.

Enjoy! Blessings.

Scott & Karen
